Creative Book Cover http://www.family-crafts.org/creative-book-cover http://www.family-crafts.org/creative-book-cover#comments Mon, 17 Aug 2009 19:34:47 +0000 Erika http://www.family-crafts.org/?p=338 Get your kids excited about going back to school with this great family craft. Have them make their own designer book cover! Choose any material like tie-dye fabric or a different patterned cloth, whatever suits your taste. You’ll need:

  • Brown paper bag
  • Pieces of fabric cloth
  • Glue
  • Bowl
  • Water
  • Paintbrush
  • Wax paper
  • Scissors
  • Textbook

1.  First you need to cut the paper bag  by cutting from the top of the bag to the bottom along the corner creases. Also cut the bottom of the bag completely.

2.  Place your textbook in the middle of the brown paper cover .Folding the top and bottom of the brown paper cover so that it is now exactly the size of the textbook, crease the folds and bring the side of the brown paper cover over the book.

3.  Open the cover of the book and fold the left side of the paper around the cover of the book. Do the same with the other side. Open the cover and mark the paper at about half the width of the book cover. Do the same with the other side. Remove the paper from the cover and trim the paper to where you marked it with scissors.

4.  Slide the cover back onto the text book to make sure it fits. Adjust the brown paper cover if it feels too snug or too loose. Once it fits properly, remove and set aside.

5.  Line the area where you will be working with wax paper. Mix 2/3 cup glue and 1/3 cup water in bowl with your paintbrush.

6.  Cut fabric into about 2” x 2” pieces. Open paper book cover and place “better” side up onto the wax paper. Start by painting a 2” section in a top corner of the paper with glue mixture. Next place a piece of fabric on the glue, add more glue and paint over the piece of fabric scrap, smoothing with your paintbrush as you go. Scrap should be saturated. Repeat until the paper cover is completely covered with overlapping pieces of fabric.

7.  Once your paper is covered, open the book cover up and place textbook back inside and carefully close the book. Place a piece of wax paper in between the front cover and front page and the back cover and the back page. This will keep the cover from actually sticking to the book as it dries. Allow to dry overnight.

Home Decorating On a Budget http://www.family-crafts.org/home-decorating-on-a-budget http://www.family-crafts.org/home-decorating-on-a-budget#comments Tue, 21 Jul 2009 17:41:27 +0000 Erika http://www.family-crafts.org/?p=266 Fed up with same old home décor? But, do not have enough money to refurbish your house! Here are a few tips which will help you modernize your home decor on a budget.
Reshuffle Furniture

Reshuffle Furniture

Reshuffle the Furniture

The first thing that you can do is rearrange the setting of your room decoration. For example try pulling your furniture away from being flush against the wall. Place it at appealing angels which will enhance the beauty of your home. A little change in the positioning of furniture will have a drastic effect on the look and feel of your interior design.

Repaint the Walls

Add new hues and shades to your walls by freshening up the paint in your house. There are lots of contemporary colors added to the palette of wall paints. Choose a color that will harmonize with the ambiance of the room. Changing the color scheme will have a significant impact on your decor.

Make It Eco Friendly

Bringing in plants within your home, will give a feeling of freshness.  Plants in your home will make you feel in the lap of nature.  Greenery of the plants will liven up your home and your life. It will revitalize your home from in and out.

Add New Rugs

Changing or bringing in a new carpet will add flair to your interior design. Select prints that are classy and elegant and add to the ornamentation of your home. Rugs give a new look to the decor and save you from the heavy cost of refurbishing your old floor.

Add New Curtains

Change the Curtains

Touch up the windows of your house by decorating them with new curtains, window blinds or window shades.  For a traditional look you can go in for waterfall style curtains and for a contemporary look try out window blinds or window shades.  They will not only beautify the living area but also control the light. In addition, they are noise, moisture and heat resistant which will add comfort to your living.

Accessorize the Interiors

A little piece of art can make a huge difference in the furnishings of the house and is highly economical. So, spruce up your comfort zone with a great painting, a magnificent flower vase, or a bright wall side lamp. You can also bring in good luck to your house by stylizing it with good luck charms like wind chimes, scented candles, sea shells, clover, etc.
